Mornie Utúlië

It’s a phrase when translated means: ‘Darkness has come’. It is a phrase sung by Enya in the tale: Lord of the Rings. Mornië alantië is also a verse from the same song titled: ‘May it Be’. When translated it means: ‘Darkness has fallen’. Some believe it to be Gaelic. However, on further research, I discovered it to be a fictional Elvish language, Quenya or Sindarin, created by J.R.R. Tolkein. The lyrics:

May it be an evening star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home

Mornie utulie
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie
A promise lives within you now

May it be the shadow’s call
Will fly away
May it be your journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun

Mornie utulie (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

A promise lives within you now

Perhaps, it is my Irish half that relishes in this poetic beauty.

The story itself took Tolkein years to complete. Whatever allegory (and there are many) of the story that one may conclude is accurate, this final song at its completion surely summarizes it well. Battles rage throughout the lives of all. Darkness comes to all. As true as those things may be, we ‘journey on to the light of day’. For those who do not believe that what we see is all there is, we have ‘a promise that lives within’ us now. ‘Believe and you will find your way’.

How true it is that we all ‘walk a lonely road’ and ‘Oh! How far you (we) are from home’. Or so it would seem. Yet, our Lord declares that “the kingdom of God is in your midst.” (Luke 17:21). How difficult it is for our little minds to grasp the things of God. May it be so for all that:

When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun
(Son)

May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
